Natural Flea Killer

Are you looking for a natural flea killer that will get rid of the fleas in your home?  If so, then you will definitely want to continue reading.  Some pet owners just don’t want to resort to the foggers and sprays that are often used to kill fleas, because they are full of insecticides and other chemicals.  If you have pets and children in the home, some of these products can even be harmful to them.  That is why you might be looking for something that will be all natural, and free of any side effects or risks.  Here are a few methods that are tried and true, and they may work for you.

Set a Flea Trap

One of the first things that you will want to do is set a flea trap up in your home.  You can make one easily by taking a small bowl and filling it with soapy water.  Then, you will want to put it down on the floor, and plug in a light next to it.  The fleas will want to come to the heat, and they will also be attracted to the light.  This will cause them to come to the bowl of water, and they won’t be able to swim once they get into the water.  The soap also makes it very hard for them to breathe, meaning they will just die there.  Just remember that you don’t want to have your dog in the room while you do it, because they may try to drink the soapy water.  This is why you might consider doing it overnight.

Salt

Salt is another natural way to kill fleas.  It eats through them, in a similar way that it eats through worms or slugs.  When they eat the salt, it will cause them to basically dissolve.  Use salt and sprinkle it around the walls in your home, and even consider using it in your carpets.  Follow up with the vacuum a few hours later, and you will likely be able to vacuum up salt, along with flea larvae and eggs.

Garlic

It may be a good idea for you to give your dog a garlic supplement along with their meals.  Garlic, when ingested on a regular basis, will really help to repel the fleas and kill them.  The problem is that it can take it a few weeks to really be effective, so you might want to give one of the other natural options a try as well.  Also, this one is mainly for killing the fleas on your pet, and it won’t really do much for the adult fleas, larva, and eggs found in your home and in your carpets.

Lemons

Lemons contain a chemical called limonene, which helps to kill and repel fleas.  You can actually take a pot of water and add some lemon slices to it.  Let it boil and steep for about 8 hours, and then you can put it into a spray bottle.  You will then have your own citrus flea spray that can be used in and around your home, and it can also be sprayed directly onto your dog’s coat, because it is safe to use on them and all natural.  It actually works well too.

Herbs

Certain types of herms can also help to kill fleas.  There are some that are used more often to help repel and kill them, and they include:

  • Citronella
  • Rosemary
  • Peppermint oil
  • Wormwood
  • Lavender

Whether you choose to get fresh ground herb leaves and sprinkle them around your home, or you get an herbal spray- you are sure to find a lot of success with this method.  There are even some herbal sprays that can be used on your pet.  The key is to make sure that you look to see if it is all natural, without added chemicals.

Diatomaceous Earth

Finally, you may consider using diatomaceous earth, which is called DE for short.  This is something that can be found at gardening supply stores, and it is a powdered substance that is safe to use both inside of your home and outside of your home.  It is powdered algae, and it attaches to the fleas and makes them dehydrate.  This is what actually kills the fleas.  You can put it on your floors and bedding, and it is safe- even around pets and children.  You can then just vacuum it up a few hours later, and you are sure to find that it helps to get rid of a majority of your fleas.

Flea Prevention for Your Pet

While natural flea options are great to use around your home, you can’t underestimate the importance of using a monthly flea prevention for your pet.  You can find some that don’t have the harmful insecticides, but are rather focused on all natural ingredients that will help to repel the fleas without causing any harm to you or your pet.  You should look through all of the options that are available, and you will be able to determine which one is best for your pet.

As you can see, there are a lot of natural flea killer options for you to consider.  You can use these methods together, for optimal flea protection- or you can give your own methods a try.  Whatever you do, make sure that you get rid of the fleas effectively to make sure that you don’t have to deal with flea allergy dermatitis, or other problems that come along with fleas on your dog.  Once you get rid of them, keep your eyes open to make sure that they stay gone- because they can really come back quickly, and they breed quickly- and can become a bad infestation in a matter of weeks.
